Frequently asked questions

  • Why 'Minus'?

    Minus isn't about temperature.

It's about removing the noise of everyday life.

    The emails.

    The notifications.

The pressure to always be doing something.

For one hour, Minus is a place to leave those things outside and simply be present.

Everything we've created - from the materials we use to the partners we work with - has been chosen with that idea in mind.

Find out about Minus

  • What is Minus?

Minus is Portsmouth's first purpose-built sauna, cold plunge and social wellness space.

Designed with intention, Minus brings together traditional Finnish sauna culture with cold water immersion in a calm, welcoming environment where people can slow down, recover and reconnect.

Whether you're visiting alone or with friends, Minus is a place to leave the outside world behind - even if only for an hour.

  • What happens during a session at Minus?

    Each session lasts one hour.

You'll move between the sauna, cold plunge pools and relaxation areas at your own pace. There is no set routine, and no pressure to follow a particular path.

Some guests spend longer in the sauna. Others prefer more frequent cold plunges. Everyone experiences Minus differently. The focus is on you, minus the distractions.

  • Who is Minus for?

Minus is for anyone looking to relax, recharge, recover, unwind or simply enjoy an hour away from everyday distractions.

Some come to recover after training.

Others come to relax after work.

Many visit with friends or partners as a different way to spend time together.

In the sauna, everyone is equal.

Find out about our sessions

  • How long does a session last?

    Each session lasts 60 minutes.

This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the sauna, cold plunge pools and relaxation spaces without feeling rushed.

We recommend you arrive 5-10 minutes before your session starts, so you can get ready, hydrate and begin to unwind.

  • What should I bring to a social contrast therapy session at Minus?

For one-off sessions, simply bring swimwear, a towel and sandals or flip flops. Or add them to your booking.

For members, we’ll provide everything you need including towels and complimentary recycled cork slippers.

Everyone will be given a sauna mat to sit on, and refreshments are always available.

  • How hot is the sauna and how cold are the plunge pools?

Our Finnish sauna is typically maintained between 90- 95°C, while our cold plunge pools are kept between 3–9°C, depending on the season and operating conditions. We also have traditional bucket showers as an alternative way to cool down between sauna sessions.

You choose how long you spend in each environment, and there is never any expectation to push yourself beyond what feels comfortable.

Find out about contrast therapy

  • Is contrast therapy just a trend?

Saunas have been part of Finnish culture for centuries.

Alternating between heat and cold has a long history in Nordic countries, where it is valued for relaxation, recovery and social connection.

Today, research continues to explore the effects of sauna and cold water immersion on health and wellbeing. While individual experiences vary, many people report feeling calmer, refreshed and more energised after a session.

At Minus, we're less interested in trends than tradition. Finnish sauna culture has endured for centuries, not because it’s fashionable, but because it has always been a part of everyday life.

  • Is the sauna mixed?

Minus is a shared wellness space where everyone is welcome.

Our sauna is mixed because we believe the experience is about relaxation, respect and community - not appearance or performance.

Swimwear is worn throughout the facility, and we've designed the space to feel welcoming and comfortable for everyone.

In the sauna, everyone is equal.

  • I'm new to sauna and cold plunges, is Minus suitable for beginners?

    Absolutely.

You don't need any previous experience to enjoy Minus.

Our sessions are designed so you can move between the sauna, cold plunge pools and relaxation spaces at your own pace. There is no pressure to follow a particular routine or stay in the heat or cold for a certain length of time.

If it's your first visit, we'll happily explain how most people enjoy contrast therapy and answer any questions before your session begins.

Many members visit once a week, while others come several times. There is no "correct" frequency - it's about finding what works for you, and allowing it to become part of your routine.
